LIFE APPLICATION | Kindness—Showing others they are valuable by how you treat them

MEMORY VERSE | You are God’s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don’t be proud. Be gentle and patient.

One More Time

Go the Extra Mile | Matthew 5:41

BASIC TRUTH | I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

For week three, we head to Matthew 5:41. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus taught, Suppose someone forces you to go one mile. Go two miles with them, (NIrV). To us that might sound strange, but to those listening—not so much. Roman soldiers could force them to carry their pack for a full mile. Jesus reminds His followers to go above and beyond in how they respond to others.

Bottom Line: Be kinder than you have to be. Often kindness can feel like an obligation. Because of that, we tend to do the bear minimum when it comes to showing kindness. What if we helped kids look at it differently? What if helped them see that kindness can be extravagant and unexpected. It’s that sort of kindness that can change people’s hearts and show them how much God loves them.

20 Adorable Ways To Love Your Kids

Now for your Kids...

Grab your Bible, a stop watch (or your phone with a stopwatch) and get ready to experience Jesus with your kids!  Here’s your theme…Kindness means showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.

Set a timer for one minute. Explain to them, during that minute, you cannot talk and must sit completely still.

Ask them, “Did you make it the full minute? Could you make it for five minutes? What about 15 or 20? That would definitely be harder. It would require a lot of patience.”

Now read 1 Corinthians 13:4 with them.

Now say to them, “When it comes to kindness, patience plays a big part. In order to show kindness and love to others, we need to practice patience.”

Set a timer for one minute again. “This time, see how many times you can repeat today’s verse within that minute. You must clearly say every word, including the title of the verse (1 Corinthians 13:4).”

“How many times did you successfully repeat the verse in one minute?  Great job!!!”

Now pray with them and ask God to help you have the patience to choose kindness this week.
