LIFE APPLICATION | Commitment—Making a plan and putting it into practice

MEMORY VERSE | Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. It promises help for the life you are now living and the life to come.

BIBLE STORY

Til I Hear It from You

The Wise and Foolish Builders

Matthew 7:24-29

BASIC TRUTH | I need to make the wise choice.

In week two, we head to Matthew 7:24-29, where we can read a parable Jesus told at the end of the Sermon on the Mount. Two builders took two different approaches to build their homes. One house was built on a solid foundation, the other on shifting sand. The message is clear: a solid foundation in life starts with hearing and doing what Jesus says.

Bottom Line: Practice hearing from God. We can’t do what God says until we know what God says. Discovering more about that starts with listening to God. We pray that kids will learn the faith skill HEAR and find how they can navigate and personalize God’s Word.

Message to Parents

Have you ever lost your temper to the point that you were yelling at your kids?  If you’re replying, “Yeah, just five minutes ago actually”, then you’re in the right place, because we’ve all been there!  Here’s the problem with yelling: 1. They don’t listen as well when we yell.  2. We feel terrible after we do it.  3. It goes against God’s Word for our kids.  Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Let’s build up our kids together!!!  Here’s a great article to help us step away before we lose our minds and our tongues.

5 Steps To Being Scream Free

Now for your Kids...

Grab your Bible, a smooth rock, a Sharpie/marker and get ready to experience Jesus with your kids!  Here’s your theme…Commitment means making a plan and putting it into practice!

Ask your kids, “What happens if you build an elaborate castle near the edge of the water at the beach? Yep, the tide will take that beautiful creation down in no time.”

Read Matthew 7:24-25 with them.

“God has given us His word (the Bible) to show us how much He loves us. When we read it and follow what it says, we will be like a wise man who built his house on a firm foundation. Jesus spoke these words to remind us that it’s not enough just to hear them. A wise man follows through in obedience.”

“When I ask you to do something, is it enough simply to listen? NO! When I ask you to clean up your room, it doesn’t matter if you hear me, it matters if you get busy cleaning up!”

Find a smooth rock outside and write Matthew 7:24-25 on one side. On the other, write OBEY. Place the rock next to their bed as a reminder to practice hearing from God this week and then following through with what He teaches us in obedience so we will be wise.
