Individuality—Discovering who you’re meant to be so you can make a difference

This Month’s Memory Verse:

How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I praise you for that. What you have done is wonderful. I know that very well.

Psalm 139:14, NIrV

Change Your Mind

Matthew – Matthew 9:9-13

In week two, we turn to Matthew 9:9-13 and discover an essential moment from Matthew’s life. As a tax collector, Matthew would have been shunned by Jews and Romans alike. He was seen as a traitor to the Jews. Matthew must have been shocked when Jesus came up to him and asked him to be one of His disciples. Matthew might have seen himself as unworthy, but that would have changed once Jesus made him feel valued.

I can trust God no matter what.

Bottom Line

Knowing Jesus changes how you see yourself.

Matthew might have seen himself as a mess. But Jesus chose Matthew to follow Him. Regardless of who we were or who we are right now, Jesus wants to have a relationship with us too. Jesus sees past our mistakes and sees the individual that God created. When we know that Jesus sees us as valuable, we can start to understand that we’re valuable too.

Now for your Kids...

Grab your Bible and get ready to experience Jesus with your kids!  Here’s your theme…Individuality is discovering who you’re meant to be so you can make a difference.

Read Matthew 9:9 with your kids.

Tell them, “ I heard that this week, Grove Kids is talking about a guy from the Bible named Matthew. Did you know, one day, Jesus stopped at Matthew’s tax collector booth and said, ‘Follow me.’”

“Matthew didn’t wait! He didn’t ask a million questions before saying, ‘Yes.’ Right then, Matthew chose to follow Jesus.”

“Matthew was disliked because he was a thief, taking more taxes than he should and keeping the extra for himself. People back then didn’t see Matthew the way Jesus did. Matthew went on to do amazing things, even writing one of the most famous books of the Bible!”

“Guess what? Jesus sees the potential in you!”

“Knowing Jesus changes how you see yourself. He saw something in Matthew that no one else could see! And just like he did with Matthew, Jesus can use you to do important things.”
