If you were at Mission Grove Church when we had comedian, Andrew Stanley, then you heard some funny jokes. I loved the one he shared about the congregation who thought to themselves, “here we go again, doesn’t this pastor have any new material for his Easter sermon?”. While Easter is no laughing matter, we can certainly fall prey to the idea we must be entertained in a new way each year. Just check out my Easter Pinterest board; new crafts, bigger better decorations, more exciting brunches than last year, ..the list goes on. Generally speaking, we are not content with the same ‘ole. And Easter can be no different. If I’m real with myself, I want to know if my life reflects this same idea of wanting more? If Jesus came and found me in my state of wanting a bigger better Easter, would he be proud? Would it show that my heart is content with the truth of His story alone? Are my traditions of the Easter Celebration sacred to Him? I don’t know. What I do know, is that my best Easter celebrations have been when I’ve truly reflected on the story and what it means for me as a child of my Savior.
As we all prepare our hearts for Easter, the best ways aren’t always through a sermon or comedic commentary, but straight from the timeless Word of God; the Bible. Take a minute to read this week’s lesson about how Jesus saved Lazarus straight from the Word of God:
John 11:38-44
