Epic: A Love Story for the Ages

This Month’s Memory Verse:

“Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins.” 1 John 4:10, NIrV

This Month’s Life App:

Love—Showing others how much they matter to you

L-O-V-E

Greatest Commandment | Matthew 22:34-40

Jesus explained this idea perfectly in Matthew 22:3440, which is where we begin this month. The religious leaders asked Jesus: out of the hundreds of laws the Jewish people were to follow, which were the most important? Jesus said that everything written in the Jewish Scriptures was based on loving God and loving others as you love yourself. For Jesus, love was most important and the foundation for everything.

Love—Showing others how much they matter to you

Bottom Line

Love God by loving others.

Love is the common thread throughout the whole Bible—the entire epic story of God. Jesus made it very clear for the religious leaders that day, and also for us here in 2022: we can love God by loving the people around us, and showing them how much they matter to us. God’s love changes us and moves us toward a life of loving others.

Message to Parents

Let’s be real. Our personal sanity takes the cake. If savings on things like school supplies and clothes weren’t important; hand-me-downs would have been a thing of the past. If you have an only child or one of each gender, you look for other ways to save. While preparing for the new year in homeschooling my two kiddos, I found myself erasing pages of a textbook my daughter didn’t finish so I could pass it down to my son. Sure, it saved me $40.00 but the time it took to erase those pages…well, let’s say $40.00 was feeling pretty petty by page 60. Especially when there are still smudges left behind. Those smudges are often like our sanity. We need a different kind of savings here. When we are multitasking so much that we’ve forgotten the child at a camp or left the stove on to get that child we left at camp; we must know we’ve met our capacity. Our sanity is running out. The only one who can truly help here outside of cloning yourself is – God. Not to get overly spiritual here, but I’ve seen it time and time again in my personal life. The ironic thing is when I don’t have time to give to another task or event to put on my calendar – I learn I don’t have time NOT to give time to God. I save the most on what matters the most during time of crazy schedules, meetings, phone calls, books to erase… God truly is my refuge, my place of hope and peace. I love the way Ward puts it in this post. “When life’s difficulties strike, we need to rely on the healing grace of our Lord, who offers us comfort. While we are focused on this life and this moment, we should realize that His purpose is to prepare our character for eternity with Him. What an amazing blessing!”
