Cliffhanger: The Story Isn't Over

This Month’s Memory Verse:

“Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time we will gather a crop if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9, NIrV

This Month’s Virtue:

Grit—Refusing to give up when life gets hard

When You Believe

Israel Goes through the Red Sea | Exodus 13:17–14:31

We finish up the month in Exodus 13:17-14:31. God’s people were on their way out of Egypt. Everything was looking great for the Hebrews, until Pharaoh changed his mind. Moses and the Hebrew people found themselves trapped between the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh’s army in hot pursuit. But with God’s help, Moses and the Israelites didn’t give up, even in a tough situation. God performed a miracle, parting the Red Sea and allowing the Israelites to escape.

I can trust God no matter what.

Bottom Line

Hold on because God is in control.

We often feel like the Israelites—stuck, with no clear way out of our circumstances. We’re not sure what to do, and we’re not sure we’ll ever get to the other side. Thankfully, we don’t need to face these moments on our own. God is with us and is always working things out, even when we can’t see it. We can trust that God is in control. God will give us what we need to keep going and make it through with grit.

Message to Parents

Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. ” I love the reminder that last week’s link shared. God will go with us. God will be the rescue! We will go through troubles. Maybe you’re in need of some rescuing now? Maybe your work is more than challenging. Or marriage. Maybe your children are wayward or just simply careless with your heart and their lives or obeying in general. I’d love to sit for coffee and discuss all of this. For now, pull up a chair, warm that cup of Joe, and let’s talk.

As the Israelites left in the direction they knew, God promised covering/protection. Exodus 13:21 tells us that by day He was a mighty cloud before them. By night He went in front of them as a pillar of fire. Day and night God went ahead of them and guided them in their escape by something that seems fairly tangible. The cloud would give a covering like an umbrella from the sun and would contrast enough against the blue sky that even those in the back would trust they were going in the right direction. The fire against the black sky was like a lantern leading the way through what would have been a dark and blinding path. They would know exactly where to go if they only followed the Lord. Fortunately, they did.

When they came to the water’s edge; however, it seemed as though God made a mistake, especially when they saw the Egyptians heading their way and they had no place to go. The cloud or fire didn’t miraculously turn into a boat. I wonder if some thought that would have been the best method. God had yet a better plan. Exodus 14 For the first time on this journey, the Israelites saw the Lord move behind them. A barrier between them and the enemy. Moses lifts his staff, the waters part, and the Israelites cross unharmed. I can’t get enough of this story. Who is to say that the same God we serve today, wouldn’t do the very thing for us? I hope you will be encouraged to know He will! God goes before us and after us at the right time! He protects us from our enemies when we follow Him. Take time to think about what direction you are going. Is God in front of you? If not, please re-think that route, my friend! If He is – journey on and don’t stop!
